That is a very sad story. Nineteen is young. (Younger now that I am older...) I'm glad your friend was able to participate and enjoy himself last month at least, and that you and his family have memories of him doing the things he loved.

His death was not a complete shock-surprise, but the cause was. I was well aware of the survival rates of the cancer he was suffering from (30% to 70%) depending on subtype. But he managed to kick the cancer, and was declared cured by the best test available.

When I saw him last about a month ago he was not looking well at all, and I was quite concerned he might have GVHD. But I did not ask/press. He had come to wargaming, about which he was quite passionate, to help the Rebel Alliance fight the battle of Endor (which we lost...), but he was sufficiently sick that his parents had to help him in, and he stayed seated the whole time.

We don't know how luky we are until we meet a great kid who has had cancer twice since he was 13.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend and I'm sorry you lost him. That is sad. Pandemic or not, it's a nasty strain and so many people are suffering from it.

My understanding is that it is not affecting people over a certain age (from health officials at my work) so I am wondering if it is either an old strain returning or slightly remixed...

My understanding is also that we expect it to persist into the fall and winter long beyond "usual" flu season.
