Miyazaki Monday
Posted in media reviews on 12/01/2004 03:39 am by TamMiyazaki Monday this week was Mimi wo sumaseba, which IMDB gives in English as “If You Listen Closely”. It’s another one of those “normal people doing normal stuff” stories, about some kids in junior high. As usual, Miyazaki makes it all really, really, absorbing. And sweet. So you feel all mushy at the end. Plus the protagonists are creative types who read a lot of books — what’s not to like ?
In other media news, we’ve got two disks left to go on Rah-Xephon, and no, it’s not making sense yet. They’ve answered some things, but generated more “huh ?”s to replace them, and I’m still distracted by the constant Evangelionisms.
Stephen and I have finished Champions of Norrath again, with the sorceress (what is with her outfits ? She looks like a cheerleader with a salad on her head) and the archer, and I’m taking a break on Wild Arms 3 (which appears to be endless) to get in some good slaughter in Onimusha 3 (Go Jean Reno ! Wait ? Who the heck is this hack doing the English dub ? Please, put the subtitled French back !). For some reason, the Monkey Brain has a lot more trouble with Jaques/Jean Reno, whose face looks really weird as an immobile map, than the (really famous, so I’m sorry I don’t recall his name) Japanese guy/Sanosuke, whose pretty mug looks just fine as a statue. Is that because I know Reno the actor has a really mobile face, while a face with more regular features just generally looks okay still, or is it just that I’ve played enough of these games that I *expect* the Japanese faces to look mask-like ?
